Albacete, 1961
Established in Barcelona since 1968, a unique artist who “paints” his works with paper cutouts, mainly from the French magazine Paris Match from the 50s and 60s. The magazine becomes his colour palette as he finds the tone he needs or the ideal grey for the shadows within its pages. García Villegas masterfully captures the expressions of the subjects portrayed. His works require two views: a distant one to appreciate the composition in its entirety and a close one, to discover the “hidden” words, phrases used expressly and related to what the person portrayed suggests to the artist and which also give the work a poetic touch. Also by observing his works closely, we can appreciate his incredible collage technique.
